- A CT wouldn't be very useful, since it's basically just a picture of the brain. But what can be done and has been done, to show that Hypnosis has an effect on the brain, is to show the metabolism (so where the brain uses "food" (like fMRI, PET scan) ) or to show the electrical activity (EEG) of the brain with and without hypnosis. fMRI: http://www.nature.com/npp/journal/v39/n1s/full/npp2014282a.html (scroll down to: W9. Brain Activity and Connectivity Underlying Hypnosis) PET: PET Imaging in Altered States of Consciousness: Coma, Sleep, and Hypnosis (Thibaut, Chatelle, Stender, Demertzi, Bernard, Hustinx, Laureys, Bruno, 2014) EEG: http://www.oalib.com/references/7101522 and yes, as you said, a study needs enough participants to be sure that there is an effect, but the research into hypnosis has been going on for years and years and studies can be pretty well replicated, so we can assume that the results are legit.
